I will be living in Sri Lanka (ශ්රී ලංකා) for the next two years, and so far, I can honestly say that this should be an easy two years.
There are of course the hassles that come with living in any other less developed country, notably the crazy driving and the lack of lettuce, but this place is a piece of cake compared to living in Dhaka. It’s an island, but we still have imported mozzarella cheese and Haagen Daz ice cream, even if it is $8.
There are several great restaurants and interesting places to shop. And then there are the quirks that make it delightfully South Asian–people calling you madam, women in beautiful saris, men hanging outside the doors of a moving train, and tea. Plus, there’s the rest of this beautiful island that I’ve yet to explore. Hopefully that’s coming up soon.
In the meantime, I’ll leave you with some pictures of my first month.
