When I was in Mumbai a few years ago, I remember waking to a knock at the door from the dhobi–the laundry man–who goes door to door collecting dirty clothes that need washing. Wikipedia has this interesting article on dhobis. Apparently Sri Lankans used to call laundry men and women dhobis, too, but now they usually just say “laundry.” There is a laundry place not too far from my house and it’s always full of clothes hanging out to dry. I stopped by the other day to snag some pictures and take a closer look.
