Back to Sri Lanka for a short while….
Friday was President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Inauguration Day for his second term. We had the day off so I walked around and grabbed some photos.
For some reason this day reminded me of a quote I read about Sri Lanka in Michael Ondaatje’s memoir Running in the Family. Ondaatje was raised in Sri Lanka and his writing is clearly impacted by his upbringing (The English Patient is a beautiful book.). He is of Burgher and Chetty origin, which means some of his ancestors were from the West. In his case, they were Dutch.
The quote is from D.H. Lawrence who apparently spent six weeks in Sri Lanka in 1922:
“…Ceylon is an experience–but heavens, not a permanence.”
